Top Medigap Plans

The right Medicare supplement plan for you might not be the plan you expect. Every person has unique needs, and what may be right for one person, might not be right for another. However, there are three top Medicare supplement plans that consistently stand out as the best for seniors.

Medicare Supplement Plan F

Many seniors find Medicare supplement Plan F to be one of the best Medicare supplement plans. Often times, this is because this plan offers full coverage for most medical needs. Plan F covers:

  • Part A deductible
  • Part B deductible
  • Blood (first 3 pints)
  • Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
  • Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • Foreign travel emergency (up to plan limits)
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment
  • Part B excess charges

Because all Medicare supplement plans are standardized, you will get the same benefits of a plan, regardless of the company that you choose. This means that all Plan F plans are the same from company to company. However, some companies might offer additional perks, such as the SilverSneakers program for seniors and other benefits. When choosing a Plan F, you might be able to receive some of these benefits.

Plan F is typically the most expensive plan. This is because it provides the most comprehensive coverage of all of the plans. Because of this, seniors are less likely to be exposed to as many, or any, out-of-pocket costs. Of course, the amount of costs depends on the situation. However, the total amount of savings might prove beneficial to most in the long run.

If you feel like you want a lower premium and can sacrifice some coverage benefits, choosing a Plan G or a Plan N might be right for you.

Medicare Supplement Plan G

Medicare supplement Plan G offers similar benefits to Plan F. Among these benefits, Plan G covers:

  • Part A deductible
  • Part B excess charges
  • Blood (first 3 pints)
  • Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
  • Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • Foreign travel emergency (up to plan limits)
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment

Unfortunately, Plan G does not cover the Part B deductible. This is what differentiates it from Plan F. Many seniors find that even with paying the Part B deductible, they have significant savings when signing up for Plan G. The premiums are typically lower than Plan F.

Besides the coverage difference, Plan G and Plan F function similarly. Seniors will have many benefits, can choose any doctor that accepts Medicare, and have a simple claims-paying process. Many seniors find Plan G to be one of the best Medicare supplement plans because it offers a high amount of coverage while still having an affordable monthly premium. Most seniors will not have to pay high out-of-pocket costs with this plan, as they might have to with other plans.

Medicare Supplement Plan N

Medicare supplement Plan N is typically known as the third most popular Medicare supplement plan. Plan N covers:

  • Foreign travel emergency (up to plan limits)
  • Part A deductible
  • Blood (first 3 pints)
  • Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment

Plan N does not cover the Part B deductible or Part B excess charges. Additionally, Plan N requires copayments of $20 per doctor visit and $50 per emergency room visit. However, on average, Plan N might save you up to 25% on your monthly premiums, Part B deductible, and copayments aside.

Plan F Going Away

While Plans F, G, and N are among the most popular plans for most seniors, it is important to remember in your Medicare supplement planning that Plan F is going away. If you are eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020, you can still choose a Plan F as your Medicare supplement plan at any time. However, if you are eligible for a Medicare supplement plan after January 2, 2020, you will not have Plan F as an available option. If you have any questions about this, it is best to ask your Medicare supplement agent.
